Cory,

Looks like several people have offered you great advice as well as offered to review your resume. I just retired from the Navy and successfully landed a job. So I would like to offer a few lessons learned that along with the great advice from the advisors at ACP helped e along the way.

Have you resume reviewsed and critiqued and then tweak it to what best suits your needs. No matter how perfect your resume may be, someone else is always going to have a suggestion for a change so at the end of the day you have to be happy with the final product.

With so many websites available to search and apply for jobs you can spend hours and hours filtering through job postings. I picked five that I felt provided the best job postings tailored to what I was looking for. Then I set filters and email alerts when jobs were posted that met my criteria.

Finally, an most importantly you need to network. Just like you are doing now on ACP with your resume. Get out and meet people. I attended job fairs, volunteered with veterans service organizations, joined a city commission, met with ACP advisors and used my LinkedIn to expand my network. I would spend 60% of my time networking. Because the resume only get you so far, knowing people that can help get you to the interview or provide you insight to an unlisted job opportunity will take your game to the next level.

My job? I landed my job by knowing the right people. I had applied for a position on USA jobs. I was then notified that my resume made the cut and forwarded to the hiring manager. I reached out to one of my networking contacts asked if he knew someone at the organization where I had applied, just so happens he did and he put in a good word for me. Next thing I know I get a call for an interview ( which I had to do over the phone) two weeks later, got the job offer.

Hit me up on LinkedIn and add me to your network if you desire. Let me know if there is something I can assist with.

Good luck,

/R
Jim

Hi Cory,

I will be happy to assist you in reviewing your resume. You can send your resume and the type of jobs in which you have an interest. May have to do some research on potential job types and employers and tailor you resume to the jobs.

Cory,
What type(s) of positions are you targeting and in what field? Have you pulled some live job listings to see what the requirements are in relation to your current skill set? Are there similarities where you can tailor your resume to match the nomenclature used in the job listing where the experience is the same?

For the areas where the similarities aren't as easy to discern, have you reached out and requested informational interviews to better understand the role and "day to day" responsibilities and then did a cross comparison of your experience?

This will be helpful for you as you draft/develop/hone your resume to ensure it reflects the job/position you want.

For assistance translating your military experience, I would also suggest (if you're not already a member) joining the Veteran Mentor Network on LinkedIn. There have been numerous articles / discussions posted on how to effectively do this in addition to the resource Gordon notes.

Lastly, if you are not already doing so, I highly recommend that you seek out a team of mentors (American Corporate Partners, eMentor Leadership Program, Veterati, those on Veteran Mentor Network) who can also provide you with assistance, support and guidance as you make your way through your job search journey.

I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Brage

Cory- I'm also glad to help. It's important that a resume get you in the door so you should tailor you resume to the exact job that you're interested in. Your experience, education, abilities, etc. listed in the resume should show why you're perfect for this opportunity. If you like, you can email me at- David.a.leibowitz@gmail.com

Cory,

Lots of folks here will be happy to give your resume a look, including me. My guess is that the result you'll get several interpretations of what your resume 'should' look like. Please remember that the resume is merely a tool to get you the interview. The key is getting that interview in a field/company that you are actively targeting.

What I would focus a majority of your time now on is exactly what your next opportunity looks like and network with people in that field. These folks will be the ones to ask what a resume should look like. Once you get that down, focus on your interview skills.

I'm a financial services guy and I can give you an idea of what we're looking for in a candidate. Let me know how I can help.

Regards,

Will

Good afternoon sir,
Thank you for your service. While I am by far not an expert resume writer, but I have a resource to consider.
The book is titled " Expert Resumes for Military-to-Civilian Transitions". The authors are Wendy S. Enelow and Louise M. Kursmark. This is easily found in your local library or on Amazon for under $20.
I am not a resume expert, but you may find this resource helpful.
Good luck in your search.
