You can also utilize Linkedin's free "Advanced search" feature to search for contacts that are also members of LinkedIn groups of which you are a member, and also other criteria.
For example, there search for members of the "Veteran Mentor Network" group on LinkedIn that are employed at the VA or "Veterans Administration", perhaps in a similar role or near the location to which you are applying. Experiment with various criteria, including keyword, title, etc.
