How can a veteran who has been out for a while and getting out of school get a break?

Veteran

Alfredo Torres Norfolk, VA

I have been out of the military since 2005 and ended up going back to school to get a second degree and Im finishing up my masters in May. I have applied to probably over 75 places and have gotten few interviews and no offers. I seem to be over qualified to entry level positions and not qualified enough for positions that someone of my age (46) would normally be transitioning to. I need help or a the very least guidence. I am seriously about to become the most education homeless man out there. Thanks for any advice.

Find an organization that's doing something you like and volunteer. If there's a national or international organization that you like but nothing that's local, figure out how to start a local Chapter and GO.
Also, please take this in the spirit in which it was intended, but you need to improve your written communication skills. There are several grammar and syntax errors in your post. You might be the Second Coming but I wouldn't know it from your lack of attention to detail.
Does it matter in this forum? Since you're asking for help, I'd say it matters. When you're asking for help (or a job), one of the goals is to make the decision-maker feel that you can do the work AND you'll need minimal hand-holding.
If I have to hold your hand for written communications there's already a strike against you.
Specific resources to be used for improvement:
1. "Elements of Style" by Strunk & White. It's OLD, but it's the standard.
2. Enable the spellcheck and grammar check on your word-processor. Do a cut-and-paste into forums/emails/blogs/resume AFTER the check is complete. If you don't understand why something's being flagged, find someone who can help. If you're getting your Masters I'm hopeful that you won't have to search very far for help.

Again, please take this in the spirit it was intended. I've been a pretty average leader in the USMC and in the CivDiv, but my folks got promoted and recognized because I could write better than most other leaders. Do yourself a favor and put yourself and your teams in a similar position.

Alfredo:

I won't pretend that I have this all figured out, but the book "What Color is Your Parachute" contains some salient guidance on self-assessment and shaping the way you find your next career. For instance, you may find that despite submitting 75 applications, you have a 2-3% chance of success using this method. There are better ways!

Good Luck.

The Mentor can hep with career stratigies, resume review, interviewing skills, etc. For now, send me your resume and I will try to help anyway I can. tomlinsonjk@aol.com

Alfredo - Looks like you've received a lot of good recommendations in the posts above. I would also encourage you to investigate whether your school has any internship/externship opportunities that you might be able to leverage. Sometimes those programs can be a great way to get your foot in the door in many companies.

I'd be happy to review your resume & provide additional comments/recommendations if you are interested.

Alfredo, I'm teaching a Personal Branding for Veterans workshop at Towson University in Baltimore on Wednesday, April 24th. I'll be happy to share the content with you afterward. I'll answer briefly by stating that because you've applied to "probably over 75 places and have gotten few interviews and no offers" tells me there's a communication/marketing issue that needs to be addressed. Is it your writing quality or message? Is it because your resume is not targeted to actually interest someone to call you in for an interview for a specific position that's open? (which is of course THE ONLY reason to write a resume) Is your language compelling enough to interest your intended audience? That's usually the problem --the talent isn't matching with the opportunity, not exciting/differentiated enough from all other resumes. Once you get that fixed and you're communicating with compelling language that positions you as the candidate they MUST interview, things fall into place. Until that happens, you will feel like there's something wrong with you and there isn't! :-)

Look up Lida Citroen. She is a personal branding specialist who has great information on defining who you now are and where you want to be. I met her personally this week in Denver and I can attest to her passion and abilities to help vets find their new career through branding. Her book is a quick read and very helpful. If you contact her, tell her I referred you.

Mr. Orr,

I remember that book from about 20 years ago when I first graduated from Siena College. Thank you for reminding me about it. I will get the latest copy this week.

Mr. Buck,

Thank you for the opportunity. My background is not in business, but more in advising, radio and logistics/supply. I would love to do academic advising as that is where I feel more comfortable. Thank you for taking the time to help out a fellow veteran.

Mr. Lewis,

First, let me thank you for replying. I understand the intent in your reply and you are correct. My problem comes from rushing to put something on paper when I am frustrated when I should be taking a deep breath and double checking my writing. Your comments are a wakeup call for me. Thank you for being candid and making me realizes that I need to relax and let the ability that I have take over and not the panic.
