I was discharged from the Navy March 30th, 2004, for the use of cocaine & received an OTH. I am now trying to become a merchant mariner. The union that I am trying to become a member of wants to place me on a MSC (Military Sealift Command) ship. The union wants me to take classes at an MSC training school. Will my OTH be a problem?

I was completely honest with the TSA & Coast Guard when applying for my TWICC & Merchant Mariner Credentials, even passed their back round check, & received both qualms with no problems. Will my OTH be a problem with MSC? I need to know before I pay for the MSC classes, which aren't cheap...

My advice would be to get a job offer in writing before you pay any money. Their offer would likely be contingent on you passing the course. But you must get some guarantee before you sign up for classes. Risk will always be there in the private sector, how far you are willing to stick your neck out is up to you.
