Looking for a rewarding sub-career that I can enjoy while I save for my dream career which is theatre and a move to LA.

Veteran

Jerome Staab Mission, KS

Hello fellow veterans, I'm located in Kansas City and am looking for a diamond in the rough i.e. a rewarding job that fits my skill sets. I am incredibly personable and have always been good with youth and also security work is something I'm good at. If anyone has any leads regarding 1st shift work with above average pay I would love to hear about it. I've been searching for quite some time and living pay check to pay check is just no way to go about living. I do not have a college degree as I left my Jr year to pursue theatre here in KC. I do improv and stand-up. Any help from fellow established veterans would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Hello Jerome,

I agree with Lawrence as a move to a place like NYC or Los Angeles could be a great move to follow your dreams for stand-up and theatre. However, for the past four months I spent time working in Orlando, Florida in Disney World. At Disney they are always looking for help in the security field and with your qualifications in the service your expertise would be more than a great fit. You mentioned your work with the youth which is an added bonus when you are working for a company that cherishes childhood memories.

I am pasting the link of the Disney Job search engine on my comment. If you scroll down and click on the icon that says Facilities/Security you will be provided with 29 careers all over the country. Many of the careers listed are in facilities however the ones listed in security range anywhere from sergeant to global securities intern.

I should also recommend the Disney College Program. This is an internship where one can audition to work in Disney World in the field of Entertainment. One could gain this unique job training and experience while being able to take some classes towards finishing your bachelors. This is a program used by ALL ages and as someone who just completed time in Disney there is nothing that can equate to the one-of-a-kind experience!

search "Facilities/Security" under the Job Category section towards the bottom of the page.

this is the website for the Disney college program. Check it out and see if it may fit what you are looking for. I know you said you would like to start a career in theatre and standup but with Disney on your resume a door can open to many more possibilities.

Hi Jerome,

Have you checked out ACP AdvisorNet's Community feature (https://acp-advisornet.org/community)? In the Community, you can search for Advisors based on location, industry and years of experience. You will see a big map with a bunch of red stars- click on the star on top of Kansas City. The results will then populate with Advisors from KS and you can message them individually to ask for advice regarding jobs that could be a good fit for you.

If you would like to speak with fellow veterans in the Kansas City area, you can simply click the 'Veterans' tab in the Community, search for veterans in Kansas City and message them for feedback.

Best of luck to you!
Ali

You'd have to leave KC, but I just heard on the radio on my morning drive that New York City Police Dept is about to launch a big recruitment campaign. I think a 2 yr associate degree or honorable discharge are the minimum requirements. There are many theatre and standup options in NYC.

I know this is much later, and I just now joined, but I can tell you a way to build an agency to create residuals that will keep paying even after if and when you decide to stop. I am a broker and been licensed since August 2014, and this particular opportunity I'm talking about doesn't always require a license, depending on your state.
