How can I transition from architectural drafting career to an engineering career?

Veteran

APRIL GOLDEN Portland, OR

I went to school learning about how to become an Interior Designer and later Architectural Drafting and design, but due to the economy Construction and Building industry has slowed. Later I studied Computer Electronics Engineering and Technology and seeking a career as a Materials Engineer or Engineering in Defense. How do I get my foot in the door?

Hi April,

There are positions in design / drafting and materials engineering in the nuclear power plant fleet.

Materials engineering is an interesting field. We have set processes to do item equivalency evaluations and the dedication of commercial products to safety related status, among other things.

What have you been searching under? While the economy has been down, there is usually a steady demand for designers / drafters using AutoCad or other products.

The way you get your foot in the door is with a good resume, that is tailored to the job you want to apply for. I'd suggest having one that is "tuned" for each of the positions you are interested in, and then hitting the job search engines such as Monster, and looking to see what is out there. If you see one, put together a brief cover letter explaining that you are interested in the job, and think you could contribute to that company's success, and send in your resume.

This is probably what you have been doing already. If that is the case, send me a private message with your resume attached, and I'll run through it and tell you what got my attention, and what didn't. Most resume issues are "packaging" - perhaps I can offer some tips to help tune your resume up, so it's better able to grab a hiring officer's attention.

Good luck - we've got your back.
