Should I transition from a hospital or ambulatory care clinic? Does it matter?

Veteran

I have an opportunity to relocate to a new job in a new city (permanent change of station or PCS) soon. It will be my last job before retiring and pursuing a career as a Hospital Administrator. If I plan to climb the hospital corporate ladder, should my last targeted assignment be a "unit manager" at the Navy hospital, a "clinic manager" at the ambulatory care center attached to the hospital, HR manager in Manpower, or other?

Hi Marlow - I've worked both in hospitals as an employee and consultant in healthcare IT. Short answer is that I don't think it matters. The way healthcare reform is going, plus things like HIEs (healthcare information exchanges where your local MD can see your lab results from when you were seen elsewhere), the hospitals and clinics are more interrelated than ever before. Long answer, though, is that I'd suggest that you round yourself out, if possible. So if you're clear on hospital policies, processes and operations, I'd say round it out with the clinic rotation. And vice versa. When I need resources now, it's for one or the other, and I'd love to have a resume with experience in both areas. Makes you more marketable and versatile. Good luck!!!

Hi! While I am not in the Health Care field, I have a former United States Naval Academy classmate that I am still linked in with that filled a variety of leadership positions in Healthcare. His name is Reed Kennedy. He is currently at Virginia Tech Business College in the Director of International Programs where he teaches in the Management Department. His email address is kennedyr@vt.edu. Feel free to let him know that I am linked into the ACP Program and that I referred you to him.

I also know Rear Admiral (Ret) Christine Hunter who is out of the Medical Corps. I do not have her current email address as she just retired. Her husband's email address (Bob Hunter) is
bhunter2@att.net

They may be able to assist as they both have extensive health care experience.
