Looking for a full-time administrative assistant position within the Chicago area

Veteran

I am relocating soon to the Chicago area once my husband completes his military duties in VA with the Marine Corps. I was hoping to get a head start and move as soon as I found a job in IL so the transition would be easier. I've been applying for jobs via Linkedin, Indeed, Illinois job sites, etc. without any luck. I have had a couple of phone interviews but they never went any further than that. I see that a lot of people are applying for the same jobs as me and find that maybe my location is causing me not to get past that initial phone interview stage or even consideration for a position. I was hoping I could get some advice on whether or not I should pick up and move to Illinois (I do have family there) and try finding a job that way. Also if there is anywhere else someone thinks I should look or other ways to assist in my search for a job please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Sandeep - send over a resume. I manage a medical device business in Buffalo Grove and can tell you if we have something that would be worth discussing.

Hi Robert,

Thank you so much for your input. I wasn't sure whether or not I was "allowed" to live in one State while working in another. I recently moved to the U.S. from Canada so I'm slowly learning how it works around here. My husbands family lives in the south suburbs so I will definitely start expanding my search to Indiana since it seems like there's a better job market there then in Illinois.

I will definitely talk to my husband about this and see what he thinks. He's returning to school to eventually receive is doctorate in physical therapy so I will be the one working for awhile. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hope something comes my way.

Once again thank you so much for your advice, it has been extremely helpful!

Hi Sandeep

The Illinois business climate is tough for the firms with regulations and high business taxes and fees that many firms are moving across the Wisconsin and Indiana borders. The Illinois unemployment rate is 8.5% whereas the WI and Indiana rates are almost half that. Many Illinois people are living in the south suburbs and working in Indiana where there is a fast growing business climate or the same is true for those living in the northern suburbs and who work in WI.

That said, there are large firms that want a presence in Chicago. For instance, I work for HP. These firms do have some requirements for Admin help, but there are more applicants than jobs. I would first check out northern Indiana and southern Wisconsin. I live in a suburb that touches the north side of Chicago and can be in Wisconsin in 35 minutes. It also may be something that your husband may want to look to do.

Talk to your family about this option and my thoughts.
