Lean Six Sigma vs. Human Resources Management

Veteran

Joseph Motes Fort Riley, KS

I am currently finishing my BS in HR, but also have added to it the Lean Six Sigma certification "green belt level" to the course load. My question is: What is more marketable, and more likely for successful hire, HR position, or Lean Six Sigma? I am going through an MEB, so I am trying to decide which way I want my resume' to guide me.

Hi Joseph,
I was a PEx Champion Sponsor at my company at one time so maybe I can share some real life experience…

Under the current environment, there is no question that Lean Six Sigma Process Excellence is much more in demand compare with B.S in HR Management. Many companies are downsizing and out-sourcing HR function which is one of the reasons you hear from others having a tough time to find HR job in this site.

It depends on your interest and goal. If you can get to be a certified Black Belt, your salary will be higher (compare to HR) and your opportunities are much better.
Because PEx can apply to Engineering, Operations, Project Management, Process improvement, even how fast MacDonald serve a hamburger or how fast Amazon ship out a package…One of my children has a MSME and is certified master black belt, she is highly recruited and has no problem finding a good paying job in various industries.

Good luck and thanks for your service!

Hi Joseph. Great question here. I have some experience with the LSS certification program. In short LSS certification is a great benefit to have if you are well versed in providing lean solutions to a company. You would do very well with more training in this area; if you really want to pursue it. The green belt is a good place to start yet, you are aware that attaining the experience and title of black belt carries a bit more weight. If you are able to go for the black belt that would be to your advantage.

Now, if your background is in HR and you have years of experience under your belt this is where you will prove your KSAs to an employer. The LSS certification is a bonus unless you have many years of projects and at the black belt level. HR is needed by virtually every company. Your certifications will enhance your core skills and experience.

Happy to help!
