I'm currently looking for internships with investment banks like jp morgan, blackrock and barclay. I know resumes and coverletters are important but if you have any other tips or suggestions, please share.

Try starting here. This is a network of veterans in the Wall Street community.

Hi Tae,
You do not get what you’re afraid to go after. One option is to seek out other NYU alumni or veterens working in finance on LinkedIn, and add them to your network with an intro including your shared background and profession, what about them, their role or co. inspired you to reach out, and perhaps a bit about what you bring to the table.

Rather than flat out asking for an internship, you may consider requesting to meet or speak for the purpose of career guidance, which may lead to direct opportunities or other contacts.

NYU may also have a career center with some good resources.

Another thought is to create a login on one of the Bloomberg terminals (I believe NYU has several) and take the Bloomberg Essentials exam on BESS<GO> (it's free), which you may add as a skill to your resume. You can also plug in the command JOBS<GO> to access a financial jobs database.

Thanks for your service, and best of luck!
Gia

Be sure to build your personal network on LinkedIn, inviting everyone you know into your network. You may very well find that someone in your extended network would be able to make a valuable introduction leading to an internship.

Peter, thank you for your answer. I currently go to NYU - School of Continuing and Professional Studies. I am junior and expected to graduate in 2013 summer. My MOS was automobile mechanic in the marines but most of the times i was put in different positions from company office clerk to mail room supervisor. The method I applied so far was by going on to the company's website and apply there. I know it has almost 0% percent of getting an interview in this way, but it was my only way so far. I do have LinkedIn account. Maybe I should try to contact them. By the way, wouldn't it be little awkward to message a stranger for internship ? Thanks.

Tae, tell me a bit more about yourself. Where did you or do you go to school? What experience do you have before / after the military? These will be big factors in how easy / hard it will be to get an interview at a firm. Make sure you use lLinkedIn to find veterans at companies you want, and message them on there. I tend to get about 1 in 10 to respond.

After a conference in June 2011, the http://www.veteransonwallstreet.com/index.html site seems to be inactive at the moment. Do you know any other networking site? or anyother advice?

Norman has a great suggestion!
Especially with the Wall St. banks, there is nothing like a "warm introduction", an intro by someone who can make a personal call.
Good Luck,
Arnie Scott
