Hello my name is John Dahlia and I am one of those veterans who find it difficult to find meaningful employment. In the US Navy I worked as a hospital corpsman"green" side with the Marine Corps. Both during active and reserve duty I was in a combat unit either working in medical or dental. Now I am a college grad who is 3 classes away from finishing my Masters Degree in political science. I recently moved to the Virginia Beach area because my wife is in the Navy. I am finding it extremely difficult to find work because either I don't have enough experience or I am over qualified.
I need help!

I did quite well working in the Hampton Roads area as a Medical Device Sales consultant. There are also huge health systems in that area that employ hundreds. Employers in general will want to know what kind of work you are interested in doing and the path that you took. For example, why did you get a masters in Political Science while working as a hospital corpsman? I would imagine that opportunities of being some kind of liason between providers and the policy makers are limited. So you might have to face considering employment that doesn't really value your masters as much as you the work you put into it. I liked Damin's advice above. I found my job through a recruiter as well.

Hi John,
The Hampton Roads area is surprisingly tough to find work for Veterans and Veterans spouses. That area is largely Military whether active or former so it's tough to stand out. With that being said, check out Lucas Group (www.lucasgroup.com). If you have a degree (which you do) they'll set up interviews at companies for you. The only potential draw back is, it might not be in VA Beach.
Military.com puts on a ton of Job Fairs in that area, just go to that website to find out more. Lastly (if you haven't tried already) try the GS positions, (posted on USA jobs.com) on one of the bases around there. Good Luck!
