Is there a contact with McKinsey & Company to set up an internship.

Veteran

Kyle Owens Sanford, NC

I am looking to do an internship in consulting as I transition from the Army. I would like to do it with McKinsey in the Charlotte office if it is even possible. Just looking for a contact to see if it is even possible.

From a colleague who is an Associate Partner at McKinsey and former Army Officer:

We're launching the McKinsey Military Fellowship (SkillBridge), a new DoD SkillBridge program focused on active duty U.S. service members preparing to transition into civilian employment.

This 10-week program, which mirrors our undergraduate and MBA internship programs, begins March 2023. Transitioning service members will experience unrivaled professional development opportunities while helping to create positive, enduring change in the world. We are excited to offer an early-access opportunity for talented service members, who we find are well-suited to management consulting careers due to their experiences navigating environments with diverse teams.

All interested service members planning to separate between May 15 and Aug 28, 2023 are invited to join us for an information session on Wednesday September 28, 8-9p ET (https://lnkd.in/g_-cbdZn) or Monday October 3, 8-9p ET (https://lnkd.in/grmfHUgR). We will provide an overview of the program, cover application and interview requirements, demonstrate a mock case interview, and host a Q&A session.

The SkillBridge application opens in October

As a McKinsey colleague, you’ll experience many benefits, including :

Applicants will be asked to solve several business problems over the course of up to six separate 45-60 minute interviews
Successful applicants typically require two to three months of case interview preparation
Roles offered will be individual contributors aligned to our apprenticeship model

McKinsey and EY-Parthenon are the only strategy consulting firms I’m aware of in Charlotte. The internship process is very formal and begins at either a target undergraduate institution (juniors), during the first year at a top 25 MBA program, or by making connections at the Service Academy Career Conference for networking and follow-on interview. There is no route in directly from service.

You would expect to compete with your MBA peers (roughly 1/3 of MBAs go into consulting and maybe 5-7% of applicants get an offer from a single firm so it’s rough). You would be given a behavioral interview and a case interview to test your business acumen and analytical skill - which is a big differentiator. Most people live or die by the case - there’s a lot of Type 2 error and that’s accepted for strategy consulting firms to maintain their elite image.

Victor Chang has free case interview prep materials available on his website but you’ll need to prepare with a professional to start. 1st year MBAs start prepping with 2nd years who have successfully interned, before practicing with each other. We tell vets that it usually takes about 40 cases to be “ready”, allowing 30min to prep and 30min for careful debrief.

Start by connecting with current consulting professionals and get to know the landscape. Vets on LinkedIn will usually be open to a coffee chat discussing themselves, but also check Veterati and Sevice2School for the MBA route.

Richard has great advice. I would check the McKinsey website and the Charlotte office for names of employees as well as the same on LinkedIn. Search McKinsey first and then filter with Charlotte, NC as the location. All members names will show up. Read their profiles and then call the office and ask to speak to the person who best matches your skills from your Army work. Thanks for your service and good luck.
