LinkedIn Tweaks and Resume Alterations

Veteran

Brandin Lea Austin, TX

I am seeking the professional advice from my friends and Colleagues here at the Advisor-Net to revamp my LinkedIn profile and professional Resume. I would really like to focus on my extensive project management experience, but keep it concise enough that head hunters, recruiters and hiring managers will actually want to read it. Any Suggestions?

At the risk of being repetitive, since I've cited this in a previous post, this may be helpful in the tweaking ..

Having worked in Human Resources/Staffing...Hiring Managers get MULTIPLE resumes...make sure you tailor your resume to the job opening...i.e. ensure opening statement covers many, if not all, of the "required" elements of the posting. If at all possible...keep your resume to ONE page...once again...hiring managers don't have time to read through multiple pages of a resume!

On your Linked In profile, I would suggest:

- clean up your job description and focus it on what you want to do. "PMBOK" isn't a job, nor is "Optimization" or your phone number. If you want to be a Project Manager, just use that. If you want to be a Financial Advisor, just use that. If you're open to either than use Project Manager and Financial Advisor. But the rest of it is distracting.

- agree with dropping the test scores, especially for SAT. That makes you look like you're still in high school.

- VERY nice job giving us measurable, objective performance bullets during your time with Capitol Wealth. Can you do the same with UFSG, CACI, and your time in the Army National Guard? [rank at time of separation may not hurt either].

- you may want to just list all of your military awards in a single list, rather than as separate items. Makes it easier to read and doesn't look overblown.

Hi Brandin,

First, thank you for your service.

You definitely have extensive technical project management experience that companies desire. It's great that you are focused on polishing your LinkedIn profile because that's what recruiters search in these days. Consider the following tweaks to your profile:

* Personalize your summary - Rework this section to make it really about you. Currently it reads like most other project manager summaries. What is your PM style? Is it a reflection of your personality? Do you have a hobby that helps with your work? What inspired you to get into aviation technology?

* Remove the section on test scores - Your experience says enough.

* Move the Certifications and Awards sections up - Move these two sections to right after the Experience section.

* Refrain from listing your Facebook as a "personal website" on LinkedIn - It provides no value and may even deter a recruiter, especially if your FB has less than professional public updates or photos. If you want a personal website try something like http://about.me which is free.

Good luck!

Eugene

This is a great how to reference book for LinkedIn: How to Find a Job on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ 2/E by Brad and Debra Schepp. I highly recommended it.

Brandin, Should you consider including your immediate goal and/or what you offer a firm in your title and/or as the first phrase or sentence in the summary?

Others can probably come up with something better, but something such as "Team-oriented Project Manager with ability to add immediate value in areas that include x, y, z".
