Joe,

Separate yourself from the masses. What makes you uniquely qualified, and what does that talent do for me as a business owner? Your intro/resume reads exactly like my own career summary did (and thousands of others). Most military personnel that ever spent any time in an S-3 shop or in any level of leadership or command could echo the same. It isn't unique and I'd argue that it isn't all that you bring to the table.

I'd recommend doing some personal reflection and coming up with a value proposition. Your intro says, "I HAVE x award, x certification, and 'management' of x numbers of people or things." What I need to hear if I am an employer is conviction regarding how these 'haves' translate into "I DOs". In other words, what's in it for me, the employer?

What kind of work are you looking for and how does your skills set prepare you for success in that role? If you can define that, you're well on your way.

Regards,

Will

I concur with several of the other comments about civilian companies having a hard time aligning military experience with corporate experience. However, there are several companies that actually do focus on hiring veterans and spouses of activity duty personnel. Also, with the virtual nature of business these days, more and more jobs can be dome remotely "from home." I live in KY but report to a VP I have never even met in person who lives in Chicago. So, even if a position is listed for, say Toledo, OH, you can always ask if telecommuting is an option. Not necessarily trying to make a pitch for my employer however, Xerox is one of those business that has an active military/veteran hiring program. We also have several large facilities in S. KY that have federal contracts to Top Secret Security clearance would be a real plus. http://www.xerox.com/jobs/military-leadership/enus.html

I agree with David. The people interviewing you for employment went from high school to
college to work behind a desk. Perhaps their grandfather was in Vietnam or Korea. They have no idea what you did in the military. They want to know how you can increase their bottom line and profitability. Use your high level security clearance. Go work for a defense contractor who sells bullets, rockets, or maybe food for the PX.

Sgt. Major... Some realities. Many employers will appreciate your service and level of leadership but far too many do not. I was told that I knew nothing about managing people since all I had to do was issue an order and people in the military had to obey. You and I know that's not true but the bias is there. I recommend networking to find sympathetic employers. Don't give the others the time of day. They don't deserve you.
