Is there a demand for Power Engineers?

Veteran

Timothy Neese Rapid City, SD

As a Electrical Engineering student I have been told numerous times that there is a shortage of Power Engineers. When I search for job openings I am lucky if I find one for a recent graduate. Is there a reliable place I can check to see the demand for certain engineering jobs?

Try Power Enginners, Inc website...go to employment...then look at new hires...I worked with this group in the 90's...mostly EE's... In my opinipn with any employers...as for your military experience...not relevant...when you get past the first interview with HR....then comes the interviews with EE' s you will be working with...perhaps 1% are prior military...you will be viewed as a Tech involving power unless you have a degree..EE' s go to college and get a job quick when the economy is good.

You will have little or no problem getting a job. We have far too few Engineering graduates in this country. Most college students seem to take the "easy" way and get almost useless degrees. Wait until your Jr. or Sr year in college and then start seriously looking.

I have no certifications at this time. I am currently a student in college. A vast majority of the jobs I have seen on those sites list 5+ years of experience needed. Does my 8 years of being an electrician in the Navy count for experience?

Hi Timothy -

Have you checked the job boards? Indeed lists 29,959 jobs, CareerBuilder lists 3,342 jobs, and LinkedIn lists 56,078 Power Engineer jobs. Monster.com, Powereng.com, and ieee.org all have job listings as well. What certifications do you have? I'm sure many of those I just described are available for junior or entry-level.

Yes, your military experience is highly regarded.
