I am going to me medically separated from the Army in roughly 5 months for a back injury I sustained in Afghanistan. I am still very physically capable just unable to perform "military duties". I serve as a Military Policeman and hold the rank of sergeant. I want to move into a management position, preferably with a big box retailer as I am a very strong communicator, problem solver and extremely ambitious. I want to work for a business that will give me an opportunity to grow. My first question is if Retail Management fits my strengths that I have listed? Also, would if anyone would be willing to review my resume and give me some feedback on how to improve it ? I also have a few more questions for someone who is knowledgeable in the field if they have some time to answer them. I used to work for Lord & Taylor on the merchant-side (the people who buy and allocate the merchandise). One of the first things they did is give me a math test. Prior to going into an interview, make sure you understand how to calculate markups, markdowns, etc. You should find a college that has a retail course and find out which textbook they use. There is a chapter or section on retail math (although it could be spread out among several chapters). I used to teach retailing at a local college, but for the life of me, I can't remember the textbook I used. I may still have my lecture slides.
One way to combine you military experience and you interest in retail management is to start in loss prevention. Cutting down on employee theft and shoplifting are a significant drag on profits. It isn't physical. Most retailers do not want their staff to apprehend thieves because of the potential legal liability, but simply deter theft from happening.
Retailers like people who are outgoing, can motivate their staff and are detail-oriented. I knew a CEO of 200+ store chain who would notice gum on the carpet 50 feet away. Retail requires that kind of focus.
