Advice for job opportunities or recommendations for upcoming transition?

Veteran

Tyler Harman San Diego, CA

Ive spent five years in the Marine Corps as an avionics electronics technician and will be transitioning from active duty in a few months. I would like to continue in the field of electronics, and have been searching for jobs in the Chicago area or anywhere in the Midwest. Im working on my BS in electronic engineering, and just looking for a chance to get my foot in the door at a nice company. Any suggestions or recommendations would be helpful. Thank you

Hey Tyler,

Since your experience is avionics you need to think if you want to stay in the aviation field.

Keep in mind that to work for an aviation commercial shop you need an A&P license so don't bother applying for these types of jobs if you don't have this. But don't worry. Getting an A&P should take about 18 months. Then you can apply anywhere. Since you have previous experience your chances are much higher.

Aviation shops that mainly do military type of work don't require A&P licensed mechanics. There are plenty of these in the Midwest. But keep your options open and get an A&P.

A BS in engineering could lead you to Boeing. They are in Chicago. But you got to network to find a position there. Sending resumes online is a waste of time. That's like throwing a golf ball from a Blackhawk in the night and expect somebody to find it down there.

I think you have a better chance at focusing at a market where you have experience, avionics/aviation related but with a good strategy.

I met hundreds of Veterans that tell me "I cannot get a job as an aviation mechanic". I asked them if they got the A&P. They said no. Duh!

If you need more help please let me know.

Hi Tyler.
I would look at any electric utility. The pressure is on for them to be more efficient, and most have dated infrastructure. The opportunity is upgrading their infrastructure for the next 20 years. Water companies are also a good place for an EE. All utilities are upgrading their infrastructure for tomorrow's demands.
Insurance agency is also an option.
Good luck.
