Hi Josephine,

Don't assume the non-profit world is also non-competitive. There are lots of good, well-intentioned people in the non-profit sector, but the funding is often scarce, and the competition to secure that funding can be vigorous. If you can find someone with experience in grant writing, that would be helpful. Also, know that granting organizations typically have a mission/purpose that pretty well directs their funding. You'll need to have a pretty clear idea of what you want to do, and then try to find foundations and others who will consider grant proposals in your area. You might also try volunteering with a non-profit helping kids in your area, to get a feel for what your venture might look like.

You may also considering volunteering at a similar organization and seeking a mentor that understands your ultimate goal. I would expect that organizations that seek to help needful children are open to your assistance and will work with you to as you develop your own initiative.

Hello Josephine,

You should start by creating the company, establishing the by-laws and how you plan to run the business. Then you want to apply for exempt status through the IRS. http://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Profits/Application-for-Recognition-of-Exemption.

I hope this helps.
