I am currently on active duty and am planning to start taking college classes soon. I am wanting to major in Computer Engineering. I know that this is a growing field and am interested in finding ways to set my resume apart from others ie. additional certifications.

Take the time to develop compelling PAR statements as shown by this site:

I really get bored reading functional resumes ("I was responsible for computer programming in Java") but really enjoy reading resumes from candidates who can demonstrate the impact of their actions and why they're different ("Designed and developed an authentication library in Java that improved overall security and greatly reduced development times for the whole team.").
You've probably heard this before, but leading with a solid, results-oriented summary is also an attention grabber.
Another way to help gauge whether you're different is to modify your LinkedIn profile so that you think it shows a prospective employer all your achievements and what you're capable of, then do a candidate search for your ideal job. If you're not in the top of the search results, do some tuning (WITHOUT lying) to improve the results.
Example: you think you've tuned LinkedIn to show that you are the best Firmware Engineer in the world. Now have a friend pretend they're a recruiter looking for the best Firmware Engineer. If your profile doesn't come up early in their search, keep tuning/tweaking. Take what you learned on LinkedIn and apply it to your resume.
