I’ve grown an interest in the cybersecurity industry and would like to reach out and ask if anyone has any tips about this career. I was told that “Cybersecurity is a field where you don’t stop learning” which is what intrigued me. I’ve reached out to a counselor on HireHeros and he recommended/helped me out with coursera. If anyone else is on coursera or in the cybersecurity sector, are there recommended classes on where to start in coursera for beginners? or any recommended books at all?
Thanks for your service! I used Coursera for a Data Science training program last year and loved their platform. As far as cybersecurity training resources, here are two recommendations specifically targeted for Veterans:
Also, I came across a helpful cybersecurity domain map the other day that you might want to check out from the perspective of narrowing your focus / specialty area to identify specific training courses: https://i.redd.it/t0kzgnyb0w0z.jpg
I’d suggest that you network at the target company or industry. Use LinkedIn to find people already working there and reach out to them. Ask them the process they used to get hired and ask them to help you navigate the hiring process and if they are willing, ask them to submit you as a referral. These activities require much more time on your part but in my opinion would greatly increase your chances for success. Good luck!
thank you all for your responses! i will definitely look into what guidance you have all provided me with.

I think your journey may be similar to the information posted for Jonathan at:
I work closely with Application Security Engineers, If you are interested in doing an Informational Interview with one I could probably share contact information to them.
Contact me directly at email@example.com if you are interested.
Sorry, I apologize for my abrupt ending. Thank you for your service and God Bless.
There is a research technique called Informational Interviews. Research this process and begin reaching out. The best thing here is you are interviewing people in the industry, so the information is first hand. Be very careful about college/universities as their primary roles is to sell credits! If you hear from a good majority of your interviews they require certification in or a degree in XYZ, then you interview the schools. As someone with the GI Bill you are a target and represent big bucks.
Look up Micheal Quinn on LinkedIn and follow him, he provides networking workshops on line and also has an opportunity to hook you up with internships via skillbridge.
You might want to look into cybersecurity bootcamp offerings.
Good way to get immersed in the topic, make network connections, and prep for cybersecurity certifications.
