Retiring in 10 months and need some resume assistance.

Veteran

Larry Madison Fort Knox, KY

Good day everyone,

I'm an Active Duty Staff Sergeant with almost 18 years, at the time of retirement, of Active Duty service. I'm a Pharmacy Specialist by MOS, but a jack of all trades on my evaluations. In the last 10 years it's been very rare that I performed my job as described on a military/civilian position description. Like most, I want to market my management and leadership skills in the fields of Project Management, Human Resources, Logistics, or Performance Improvement.

I'm currently enrolled in school and will complete my BS in Business Administration about a month after my retirement date. As I've read on this website, and LinkedIn, I will begin the process of earning my PMP certification. I have thought about upgrading my Lean Six Sigma to Black Belt, but will have to wait until Im done with school and can find a performance improvement measure that I can get sponsored.

I would like to see if I could have someone(s) glance at my resume and cover letter and offer some advice. It's somewhat general right now, but I want to use it to build my "job specific" resumes. I know many have stated to be more "job specific" with the resumes, but this is my first feeble attempt and any assistance, criticism, or brutal virtual beatings anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for your time and service.

Respectfully,

Larry Madison

Good luck with your search!

Happy to review your resume. Please feel free to email me at kmtama@gmail.com. It is very helpful while creating your resume to find an "ideal" job description and use that as a basis.

Best,

Larry,

My resume is online at www.jresume.com/jdlawson . I am an Armor officer by trade, but have not really sat in a tank since OBC. I highly recommend reserving an area on your resume for your "core competencies". Get that Black Belt Certification while Uncle Sam is still picking up the tab as well. Larger companies that you will be targeting love it.

Also, have you tried online tools like http://rezscore.com/ to rate your resume? Or follow the tips in hhttp://www.jobclinic.org/resume-rater.html to evaluate your resume yourself?

Larry, A quick head's up. You mention Project Management. The VCTP Program at Syracuse offers several certifications (PMP & CAPM) related to project management, and the next deadline for the guided track is tomorrow Aug. 26, 2013.

Tom,

Thank you for the tips. I have placed a link to my LI profile (still under construction) to my profile here on ACP-Advisornet.

As far as the school is concerned, I will check with Indiana U. and see what they have to offer.

Again, Thank you.

Larry,
Thanks for your service, and it's great you are being proactive in planning your next career.

* Be sure to also pay attention to your LinkedIn profile (resume, recommendations, connections, etc.). Consider posting a link to your LI profile on your acp-advisornet profile.

* I recommend also requesting assistance from your school's career planning center and alumni network. If the school is taking your money or the taxpayer's money, it should be able to help you write a top-notch resume and LinkedIn profile. If they can't help, consider transferring to a school that can. (My bias is to a traditional school with a great career planning center, active alumni network, and alumni clubs throughout the country. Many state schools meet these criteria and also offer online degrees.
