How do you get Hiring Managers to interview you?

Veteran

Wayne Demetriff Hanover, MD

I seem to connect great with recruiters at all of the virtual events I attend and they take all my information and resume that they say they will be passing up to the hiring team/manager and then I don't hear back or have my application rejected. I interview great, from what I have been told, but I can't seem to get to the interview.

Hey Wayne,
I want to echo what Jeff said about LinkedIn. It is a great way to find a connection in the company to get an inside view there. You can search by current employees and look at previous employer and search for U.S. Army and you will find plenty of vets that work there. Find a few that you think you have something in common with and connect that way. You can even get referrals that will help your resume be seen.... just don't ask for that up front. Just say something like you you are a vet that is looking to get hired there and wanted to see how it went for them or something like that and see where that goes.

Good luck!

I’d suggest that you network at the target company or industry. Use LinkedIn to find people already working there and reach out to them. Ask them the process they used to get hired and ask them to help you navigate the hiring process and if they are willing, ask them to submit you as a referral. These activities require much more time on your part but in my opinion would greatly increase your chances for success. Good luck!

Hi Wayne, great post! I can understand how deflating that could be.

Silly question- after the virtual or in-person hiring events/career fairs, do you followup a day or two later with a thank you email to the recruiters who take your resume?

May not make a difference but could help make you stand out further, especially given the high number of potential candidates they meet.

Hope this helps!
