Military spouse seeking assistance in searching and applying for a PhD program

Veteran

Rachel Jones Grovetown, GA

I'm looking into getting a PhD in Aerospace Sciences or National Security. Due to being a military spouse with a full-time job, I'm seeking an online program. I'm seeking out a mentor that might be able to advise me with insight into finding a good program, requesting letters of recommendation, and how to find a professor for your thesis.

Rachel, contact ACP & apply to their formal mentorship program https://www.acp-usa.org/spouses

I am a mentor to 2 spouses presently (both are in college/grad school), BUT I know so little about your chosen fields that I don't think I'd be of much assistance to you, sorry.

Rachel,
One thing to consider before choosing a PhD program - or any graduate program for that matter - is whether your desired employer will hire you with degree from said program.

There is zero doubt in my mind that schools will take your hard earned money. However, if Boeing, Lockheed, SpaceX, etc. only hire Aerospace Engineers from a select number of schools, then you could be putting yourself out of consideration before you even take your first class. The proliferation of for-profit universities has exacerbated this problem and "just having the degree" is no longer the guarantee of a job that it once was - in fact, those days are long gone. Some online programs don't equip people to be hired at all.

Be sure to do your due diligence on this one. Here's the list of top ranked graduate schools for Aerospace Engineering:

Your other questions will depend upon the school you select.
