How to become a VSO

Veteran

Daniel Wood Villa Park, IL

Hello,

Does anyone know of how to become a veteran service officer? I have been researching and see that there is an exam to take after a background check. However, I cannot locate where to begin the process.

Hi Daniel, that's an interesting question. Truth be told, despite having spent the past decade in the veteran service space, up until coming across your post here, I was unaware such an exam and designation existed. I've never come across it in a job description's requirement/preferred qualifications section.

That's not to say it isn't viewed favorably by VSO's but in my estimation VSO employers do not covet individuals who hold this certification, if you will. While it certainly can't hurt, I'm wondering if your efforts may be better exerted toward informational interviewing with folks in the VSO space and leaning on your ability to relate to military service members/veterans given your own military service. In my experience this is an attribute VSO's place high value on (and rightfully so).

While I haven't donned the uniform myself, I'm happy to hop on a call with you to discuss this at more length and even open up my proverbial digital rolodex of contacts in the VSO space across the Government, Non-Profit and Higher Education areas.

Feel free to DM me!

Best,
Rob
