David: software application sales. You could parlay your experience in insurance into it by selling software oriented towards that market. Sales teams are typically augmented with engineers or consultants to provide technical expertise; sales folks are expected to be savvy, but not be deep product experts.
Large employers like Salesforce, Oracle, Microsoft, Pega, etc. go through boom and bust cycles of hiring sales talent but typically always have openings.
The trend in financial product sales, including insurance, is toward commission-only (against a base guarantee equal to minimum wage). Some programs may pay you while training and studying for the exam(s), and then a salary for 6 months to a year. But then you would be expected to generate your own business.
