Career Guidance (San Antonio,TX)

Veteran

Santino Sims Sacramento, CA

Hello, I am currently in the process of retiring from the Army after 20 years of service. Will be relocating to San Antonio,TX upon doing so. Conducting some research as to what companies I should look at and what I would like to do. I am an Infantry Senior Sergeant but have a vast amount of experience in leadership, management, project managing, as well as security operations. My TS/SCI clearance is good until February 2019. I have a Bachelors in Homeland Security with a concentration in Military Operations. Prior to my departure from the Army, I am looking to obtain my Green Belt and Project Management certification.

Would like to work for a company where there is growth and that somehow allows me to help others whether it be consulting or something of that nature. A position that would enable me to give back to veterans by way of recruitment or talent acquisition would be a plus as well. With that being said, I am open to opportunities and like to research all available options presented. I have heard good things about Deloitte, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, and USAA so far. I welcome any advice or recommendations as it all will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Check with the local newspaper for articles outlining the largest companies in the San Antonio area. The economic development organization has a website that lists the industry clusters, http://www.sanantonioedf.com/industry-sectors/information-technology-cybersecurity/
That should give you a start. I can introduce you electronically to some of the EDO staff if you need it. Contact me at tim@feemsters.com or 214-693-7689. Lots of opportunities in that market.

Santino,

Have you ever thought of real estate as a career? I have many great agents I network with in the San Antonio market. They could really help you get started, learn the business and prosper. Working in our field takes discipline to stay on task, tenacity and creativity. I am sure those are areas you have developed over the years...

I would love to discuss with you sometime if you would be interested.

Hi Santino, I am here on the ground in San Antonio and if you choose to make the Alamo City your home - Welcome my friend!

Secondly, surfing and looking at any website is a good start but pretty much a waste of time. You need to be here, boots on the ground and network with people and knock on doors, etc. There are several great networking groups for Veterans here and the more you can do in person...the more successful you can be.

Feel free to connect with me and I can share some good ideas and pointers with you.

Appreciate the feedback. I have been searching vacancies on USA jobs and things of that nature. Still debating as to whether or not I want to go the federal route. I will most certainly take advantage of the resume review and things of that nature. My overall goal is to have multiple options on the table prior to my departure but also have it narrowed down to exactly I want to do. I am tracking that things may change but trying to lean forward in the foxhole as much as possible.

Hi Santino,

A few things to consider as you transcend the job search process.

a. Look at the job vacancies at the companies you mentioned above and look for similarities with your work/education experience, draft a resume and have us review it for you, if you like. Many of our advisors and prior military personnel here will be happy to review same. As you know, the key words of a resume must match those of a job vacancy for any consideration, not to mention proper formatting and cover letter etc.

b. Not sure if you have an interest in Federal employment such as Homeland Security for which you have an academic background. dhs.gov/jobs is a good start point. Any opportunity presented will be based on your research, application and impressive well written resume.

Let us know if we can be of further assistance. Thanks.
