Looking to start a career in media and entertainment in nyc !

Veteran

John Macri College Point, NY

I am looking to work in media and entertainment. But I have no experience in that field not sure how to get started in it.. i have a 4 year degree military experience and now trying to see how I can get my foot in door in entertainment industry. I was thinking about being an agent or producer mainly behind the scenes in any role to see where I can fit in best.

Maybe start a career in real estate? As you expand your connections and work in NYC, I am sure you would make contacts that would help you in the entertainment industry.

I think breaking into entertainment would be difficult, but I do know that if you have a passion for something, you can make it work.

John,

Thank you for your service. I agree with the others, this is an enormous field. With no real experience, you need to prepare your expectations accordingly. You will start at the entry level. Most entertainment companies pay very little. If you are interested in an agent career, you can expect that negotiation skills will be key to this career.

My suggestion is to seek out and network with agents right now. Start sending letter and emails. Do both. Tell them about your service and accomplishments and let them know you are interested in a career in their field. Ask for advice directly or request a chance to interview with them for practice. Also, find entertainment conventions and conferences. Many times you may be able to find a professional organization they would be a part of and they may help as well.

Building relationships and networking will be key. Find out what professional organizations agents belong to, join those organizations and start attending their meetings. That could be a great start not only for networking, but to find out more about this career.

I hope this helps.

I agree with Susana -- "entertainment and media" is an enormous field. One way to narrow your focus might be to assess your personal strengths. Try this online assessment from Gallup (just a $10 investment) & see what you learn about yourself! http://shop.gallup.com/catalog/product/view/id/427/?utm_source=sqpurchase&utm_medium=learnmorebutton&utm_campaign=strengthsquest

John,
Like any field, the more you know about what you want the easier it is to target where to start.
Agents and producers are quiet different and media and entertainment are huge fields.
I seems like a bit more background investigation, looking at the guilds and focusing your interests will result in resources and connections.
Best,

You may wish to look at some of the companies like Spectrum or other providers. They have a CTV division which puts on community television. You can start by volunteering to produce a show and then hopefully progress to employment.
