Deloitte Impact Day: What are the areas of consulting?

Veteran

Steven Jones Fairfax Station, VA

Thank you for taking the time to better explain the consulting industry!

Like a lot of military officers, I have a diverse set of experiences in addition to specialized training. My challenge is not just translating that experience, but focusing my job search on areas where I can provide the most value. I would like to learn more about

Could you broadly explain the areas of consulting/ business lines in Deloitte?

Hi Steven, thank you for your service. I think you’ve already touched on a good point in your post, “providing the most value.” I think adding to that would be your personal interest/passion and finding positions at Deloitte that overlap. Maggie’s link is helpful in this regard. The Deloitte Consulting practice is large and diverse, but don’t let that intimidate you, judging by your profile, I am sure you will find many areas to apply your problem-solving skills.

Hi Steven,

Great question, although unfortunately one that cannot be answered too simply. Within Deloitte overall, we have several services, including Risk and Financial Advisory, Consulting, Audit and Assurance, Tax, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Analytics. Each of these Services also has its own sub-sections - for example, Consulting goes further down to Human Capital Consulting, Strategy and Operations, and Technology. Below is a helpful link to "Explore Your Fit." This is designed to assist you in figuring out where your strengths and experience will best fit at Deloitte (and similarly in the more general private sector) while also incorporating your interests to provide a specific guide to the opportunities that fit your knowledge, experience, and career goals.

Hi Steven,

Thank you for your service and for asking your question today. Deloitte offers a wide variety of project experiences that span a lot of different service areas. Specifically, in consulting, Deloitte has three service areas: Human Capital, Strategy and Operations and Technology. Below are some broad explanations of what each are:

Human Capital
As companies move beyond the recession, the key challenges for business, HR and talent are becoming clear. At the top of the list? Globalization, an aging workforce, changing expectations of multiple generations, the drumbeat of technology change, intense regulatory environments, and the reality of distributed work in the cloud. The implications of these changes for human capital are profound.

Strategy and Operations
The Strategy & Operations service area works with senior management to help make major decisions and implement improvements that dramatically increase the performance of our clients' business by focusing on 'executable strategy' and by integrating industry and functional knowledge in corporate strategy, mergers & acquisitions, customer relationships, technology, financial management, supply chain, and operations.

Technology
Deloitte Consulting’s Technology professionals help clients identify and solve their most critical information and technological challenges. We provide advisory through end-to-end implementation services as well as outsourcing services and are recognized in the marketplace for capabilities across the spectrum.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Best,

Andrea Butler

Hi Steven,

Thank you for your service to our nation! Andrea and Maggie both provided rather comprehensive answers to your question with regards to the large-scale offerings at Deloitte. I noticed that you also mentioned translating your skills as a challenge and I thought that this article penned by a veteran who transitioned to Deloitte may also provide some valuable insight.
