Christopher, If you are looking to teach in Florida I have to tell you nearly every county in the state is short teachers. Your Statement of Eligibility should help you with your pursuit of teaching in Florida. There are two places I can suggest for you to look, Employ Florida for Veterans and Veterans Florida. I work for CareerSource Tampa Bay and the Employ Florida site is the state of Florida's virtual job board. I can also refer you to some recruiters who are seeking candidates for certain roles on behalf of the many companies they represent. Stay Strong!

I see that you live in FL. The state maintains a very useful website at employflorida.com You'll find this to be a powerful resource . . . . . as an aside, when I was recruiting for my employer, I would always step on the rope for a fellow vet. However, due to some internal prejudices, I would not admit to doing that. From my relationships with other recruiters, many did what I did and just did not advertise the fact. Point being, early on in the process ask about a company's veteran preference as they may not advertise that inclination in print.

Dear Christopher,

I am not aware of a 'list' of companies that hire Veterans first, but your preference as a Veteran goes a long way when applying for Federal jobs.

Advisor Deb Miller offered good advice about creating an account on www.usajobs.gov. The first reason for the account is so you can build and save multiple search engines, based on whatever criteria you choose, then get daily/weekly email updates of new job announcements. Secondly, an account on USAJOBS is required to apply for any Federal position. However, you do not need an account to simply search and view current job announcements.

A quick search of USAJOBS showed 140 job announcements within 20 miles of Navarre, FL. Some but not all of the announcements require a military commitment (ARTs). Still, it might be worth a look to see if there are any job openings of interest. To get there, go to www.usajobs.gov > enter then select Navarre, Florida, in the Location field > select Search. In the left column of the next page, select Federal Employees, under Who May Apply, as Veterans with a preference are included under the Federal Employees group.

Alternatively, you can use the Keyword and leave the Location field blank. Experiment with all of the filters in the left column to either broaden your search or to narrow the results.

Good luck with your transition and thank you for your service!

Sincerely,
Bob Jurasek

Chris,

Thank you for posting this question on ACP AdvisorNet! I would highly recommend checking out our 'Community Page' where you can search for fellow veterans and professionals in geographical areas of your interest.

I'd also suggest looking at our 'Jobs' page where companies post job openings everyday. Another place to look is 'RecruitMilitary' who typically has job fairs all over the country (recruitmilitary.com).

I also think it's important to have a strong LinkedIn profile so please message me if you'd like help with that!

Best,
Erik

Several places out there. Don't forget to sign up at www.usajobs.gov which has great information on veterans preference, etc and is helpful in terms of gaining employment in other federal agencies. Gaining employment in another federal agency is awesome for maintaining and growing your years toward federal retirement, benefits, etc. Also most job search places like Monster.com have helpful info on veterans preference. Here are just a few sites you can search for companies who hire veterans, there are always local companies who also prefer to hire veterans who won't be listed on any national listings; however, this can get you started: http://www.hireveterans.com/
https://www.veteranjobsmission.com/companies
