I would like to hire local veterans? What is the best way to find candidates?

Veteran

John McNamara Minneapolis, MN

I recently bought a small business.
I have the opportunity to take in candidates who have experience in the fire and water restoration business.
I also have the opportunity to teach, grow, and develop those without industry specific skills. I would love to find young NCOs.
I have had difficulty finding the best way to communicate with this group.

Hi John,

I would recommend posting your job openings on ACP AdvisorNet. We do not charge a fee to post a job opening and jobs remain on the site for 2 months.

Go to ‘Jobs’ tab and click ‘Post a Job.’ Include the job title, company name and company logo (if possible). Select an industry that applies to the job opening, and enter the zip code for the job's location. In the ‘Job Description’ section, include a summary of the position, qualifications, responsibilities, instructions for applying and contact information. You can also choose to associate the job with your ACP AdvisorNet profile, so that job-seeking Veterans may contact you with questions.

I would also recommend using LinkedIn to search for potential candidates. Search for People with keywords like 'transitioning veterans,' 'U.S. Marine Corps,' 'NCO,' in your location and send them messages looking to connect if they have the experience you're looking for.

Best of luck,
Ali

Good morning, John, and thank you for your interest in hiring veterans.

I ran a project five years ago funded by the Department of Labor. We were trying to find veterans of a particular demographic. One of my social workers started visiting the standard places - the VA, Wounded Warriors, VFW, American Legion, etc. She would ask to put up a notice on their ad boards, but she would include her number for texts and asked interested people to text her. Many of the people who saw her notes were not who we were looking for, but they had buddies who were right for our program and they networked using texts.

We did get a special phone for that purpose rather than using her personal phone for obvious reasons. We got a good number of qualified contacts that way.

Join the MEA which is the Marine Executive Association. They have a large reach into helping employers find Veterans. Good Luck!

Awesome focus! I would recommend connecting with the advisors at your local VA Hospital. They may have a board or other outlets to promote your jobs.

John, it's cool that you are trying to help our fellow veterans. You've gotten good answers. I would add use Linked In for the local Minnesota veterans and reach out to the county veterans representative. Our local county person seems to be well connected to the local transitioning group. Good luck

Mike
