Find a job in Germany?

Veteran

Bryan Sikes Dallas, TX

Hello,

I served 5 years in the Army Infantry. 1 year of those was being deployed to Afghanistan and another was being stationed in Germany.

I recently graduated with my BBA in Accounting and Finance from a large accredited university in Texas.
I would like to find a job in Germany. The last time I truly felt at peace was when I was living there and I would love to return. Can anyone give me any advice?

Dear Bryan,

In addition to the other great advice already posted, you may want to consider the job announcements at www.usajobs.gov. As of today, there are 202 job announcements for Germany, 9 of which are related to Finance. Take a look to see if there is anything of interest to you.

When you visit the website, select the option to indicate that you are a Federal Employee, as this category will include job announcements for Veterans who are eligible to apply under the Veterans Employment Opportunities Act (VEOA). Then click on “Advanced” (under the Search option) > click on Occupational Series or Job Category > select Series 0500 – All Accounting Budget And Finance > click on the next filter for Location > type then select “Germany” > scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Search Jobs.

You can save your search criteria and can get email notifications for future job announcements by creating an account on usajobs.gov. If you decide to apply for any of the jobs, please remember that your Federal résumé is much different than your civilian résumé. You can find samples of Federal résumés at www.resume-place.com, under the Resources tab.

Good luck with your job search and thank you for your service!

Sincerely,
Bob Jurasek

Hi Bryan,
I spent 6 years in Germany and know exactly what you mean! Good news is that there are many US companies that have operating locations in Germany and Accouning and Finance is a core need for any company.
So, study-up on international accounting standards, do your research and target international companies (defense-related industries probably a good idea, but it could also be any company - Walgreens , for example, recently acquired Boots-Alliance). that have operations in Germany, Austria, Belgium and then do searches for individuals in HR for those companies and contacts on LinkedIN and send them a message. Also, go directly to those corporations websites and go to the careers/jobs pages to find the openings. Even if it is a US-based office at first, ask if they look for mobility of staff!
Another key - make sure your resume is customized to any job you apply for and have it reviewed by an expert - remember it is your FIRST impression!
Good luck! Lisa

Do what you know. Look at Hagor Germany. Hagor is an Israeli bullet proof vest OEM with strong ties to Germany.

Bryan: Also look for US companies seeking staff to work overseas on assignment. If you can be flexible (Germany your goal, but other European countries as well) it should help. Good Luck! Deborah

Bryan,
Thanks for your service. It looks like there are several sites out there that may assist. I did come across chamber of commerce, http://www.gaccny.com/en/, that I thought may be a good starting point. Best- Doug
