MBA and Austin, TX

Veteran

Raymond Dishen Austin, TX

Good Afternoon,

It's been a while since I've used ACP, but I figured I'd reach back in the community and see if I could get some assistance.

Context on my situation: moving to Austin, TX in November without anything lined up. I'll be starting my MBA and transitioning out of a litigation support / business development role at Debevoise & Plimpton.

With that said, I'm looking to see if I can get help with 2 things:

1) My interest is logistics / operations, but I'm not sure if that's what I want to do. My question thus is, if I specialize in supply chain management am I limiting myself to other opportunities provided by MBA with a different specialization? If I'm unsure, is it better to go with a general management focus? I'm 30 in 2 months and I had always thought I'd have figured out what I wanted to do in life, but it seems I'm just figuring out all the things that I don't want to do.

2) Does anyone have any connections in the area for work/housing. My current plan is to sublet for months of Nov/Dec and hopefully have something worked out before the end of that.

Thank you all so much!

Dear Raymond,

There is a job announcement for a Logistics Management Specialist at www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/399365800. The salary range goes from an entry level GS-05 and has a promotion potential to GS-15. There is no degree required, but you can substitute education for experience, or use a combination of both.

Unlike their civilian counterparts, Federal résumés can often be 7-10 pages in length. Please contact me if you need more info on Federal résumés, or job applications. I am not a subject matter expert on Federal résumé writing, but I am very familiar with the concept and format.

Thank you for your service, and good luck with your job search!

Sincerely,
Bob Jurasek

Awesome, I love Austin and would live to move there some day. I have a few friends but they are on the west side of Austin in the hill country which is not convenient to the city or the college which is where you would want to be. You should research online for places close to the University of Austin for housing. That would work out better for you.
My background is in Supply Chain Management and I have an MBA. My career hasn't been solely in Supply Chain Management (SCM), I've held different positions that utilized my background and I totally enjoyed every one. You should know that careers will constantly change and grow so what you are experiencing or will experience will be different from what you planned. Embrace change and you will be successful. You should have several careers over your working life. I recommend supplementing your education with knowledge of SCM applications as most Industries will require that you have that knowledge. So whether you are in management or on the technical application side you will be ahead of the competition. Google SAP (SCM). and then look at companies like Google, Samsung, Dell, SAP, and the Austin Government, Good luck.

Hi Raymond,

I recommend that you check out ACP AdvisorNet's Community feature (https://acp-advisornet.org/community) to find Advisors located in Austin to help with your second question.

In the Community, you can search for Advisors based on location, industry and years of experience. You will see a big map with a bunch of red stars- click on the star on top of Austin or search using an Austin zip code. The results will then populate with Advisors from that area and you can message them individually to ask for advice regarding jobs or companies in the area that could be a good fit for you.

I ran a quick search in Austin and found Advisors from University of Texas, Hewlett Packard, CSC, IBM, etc. There are also many Advisors working at smaller companies that might be of interest to you.

You can also run a search specifically for Advisors in Operations and Logistics to get more feedback on which specialization might be a good fit for you.

Best of luck to you! Please feel free to message me with any follow up questions.

Best,
Ali

Hi Raymond: I suggest you go with your gut. Your concentration on supply chain/logistics will no doubt lead you to related positions in your first position or two, but as you grow in management, you'll tend to find you aren't really constrained by your major.

Also, don't feel badly about not figuring out what you want to do for the rest of your life or career. Many of those who think they've got their plans set get thrown several curve balls along the way and find their plans changing as a result. Many experts now say current graduates will have four careers, two of which haven't been invented yet.

I could never have predicted the path my life and career took after my military service. If you gave me ten guessses, I wouldn't have come close to the way things worked out. Now, looking back, I couldn't be much happier with the results. I wish the same for you.

Ray thanks for reaching out. Happy to help in anyway that I can--

Before I can answer question 1-would be good to get a little more on your background and your interests--Supply Chain/Logistics is one of the more flexible and scalable MBA's--I am an MBA graduate myself but I also want you to think about the cost/leverage of the MBA in your future endeavors. Your military background plus your experience probably lend yourself to leadership and general management jobs all ready--so if you have a passion (which you mention that you are not sure about) for ops/logistics--then an MBA might be a good role.

As I understand it housing in Austin is becoming pretty expensive so I would start that search as early as possible on the house search. Am not sure that I have the best contacts for that part of the question can certainly help with number 1--if you would like

Erik
