Looking for a mentor who works for the State of Texas

Veteran

Craig Petronella Clarksville, TN

I am about a year from transitioning and would like to meet someone who works for the State of Texas. My goal is to work in either local or state level positions. I have a few questions and being able to work with someone now would be very beneficial and helpful. I attached my LinkedIn URL for my credentials. I look forward to speaking to someone about the opportunities the great State of Texas provides.

Hi Craig, Here is wishing you a great Sunday. I agree with in that you have a strong resume and a broad of skills. I worked for Texas A&M University at Qatar, and then the other startup with Texas A&M at San Antonio and being state supported institutions was an employee of the State of Texas.

Your brand of experience presents a slight challenge to you because you have so many experiential based skills that you qualify for a wide variety of positions. Here is the State of Texas Portal which will make it a little easier in finding a career in Government: https://www.texas.gov/

Now the challenge aspect of it; as I mentioned you have a wide variety of positions in administration and have built up a strong portfolio of skills. With that being the case you feel that you qualify for a significant portion of State Jobs.

This is a clichéd phrase but are you looking at very specific areas that you are interested in? For example if I came to you tomorrow and said tomorrow, "Craig, you do not have to work for a living, you and your family are all set", what would you choose to do if that scenario were true. The more closely it mirrors your professional interests and goals, the happier you will be doing it.

Have you narrowed down the areas? Have you narrowed down the roles? What are your natural strengths? What strengths have you built up as a result of your experience? Have you narrowed down the location? Perhaps the link I shared above will help you do that. It links to every stage agency. For ex: San Antonio still has many of the based and is known for its friendliness for and to military personnel.

If you have gone through this exercise of self discovery and distillation can you share some of the info on it.

Here is wishing you a great Sunday. Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards.
Ravi

Hi Craig,

You've got quite an impressive background. I can't imagine you will have any trouble finding something appropriate. I connected to your LI profile if you care to accept it. I don't know a lot about government positions but have quite a few connections in DFW. You never know what will come up.
