Find well-known speakers in your area and ask to shadow them. Don't be afraid to approach someone very well-known like Anthony Robbins. Most ministers are wonderful speakers from whom you could learn. Finally, and this is what I did when I worked in advertising and had to present to clients: I took a public speaking course. Not only do instructors help students, they have contacts. Good luck.

All the advice above is good. What topics are you wishing to speak on? There are many opportunities to speak around Dallas, the issue is getting paid for it. Rotary Clubs, Chamber of Commerce are all looking for great presentations but their budgets are extremely limited. Several of my clients are professional speakers and I do 30-40 presentations a year. Develop a portfolio of speaking topics . Include an executive summary, an outline, anticipate outcomes and the text of your presentation.
You can be most impactful speaking from you own experiences.
Seek out groups with similar values as yours.
Video tape several of your presentations to supplement your portfolio.
Write a book, write articles for publication. People read your book and/or articles and will seek you out.
Volunteer, volunteer , volunteer and volunteer some more.
Accumulate enough money to support yourself without any income for 6 mos to a year.
Ron, Thank you so much for your many years of service! I am so glad to hear you have found a career pursuit that really "speaks" to you! The lifeblood of a speaker is being able to get opportunities to speak to audiences that are a good match for your subject matter expertise. Start by looking for conferences that are aligned with your main themes.
You may want to look for conferences focused on HR matters, or new professionals that would benefit from having a better understanding about the mind and why people think the way they do (Think high schools, universities, other young professional organizations.). Submit proposals to speak at as many of these conferences as possible, remembering that the proposal submission deadline is often months in advance of the actual conference. If your presentation isn't picked up, try to attend the conference and build your network. Many of the large professional organizations have smaller local chapters that are always looking for speakers.
It is also always a great idea to improve your skills. Be sure to stay up to date on TedTalks and other popular speaking forums to see what topics and approaches are really successful with audiences, and continue to tinker with your presentations.
