You might consider a Franchise that offers the training and proven system for success. Many franchises offer financing, especially to Veterans. (I believe I saw a couple of ads in the back of Inc. specifically targeting Veterans.) I personally bought an UnFranchise that has all the benefits of a franchise as far as a system for success but was substantially less expensive. Thank you for your service, Hero. The Small Business Administration (SBA) sponsors Small Business Development Centers (SBDC)in most universities. The SBDC usually is located in the college of business. Google SBDC to find one near you. They present workshops on starting a business and will help you with our business plan.
Michael, while I don't know about your specific city, I would bet your local chamber of commerce can direct to a local business incubator or other small business assistance group-these can offer resources specific to your business idea and how to further it, meet others with similar interest and even mentoring and business idea competitions with prize money. These seem to be popping up everywhere-at least in major cities. Also, I know in Oklahoma, the state offers occasional classes on things like obtaining a business licenses, how to set up sales tax, get an FEIN-Federal Employers Identification Number, and all the necessary tax/license requirements. If you are looking for help writing a business plan, there are many online free resources. try tcc.startupcup.com there is a plethora of info and some videos that I know from personal experience are worth your time...
You can probably guess what it takes to start a business assuming you know about that field. What you will probably learn is the importance of licenses, insurance, incorporating, marketing, contracts, and getting paid.

The above is good guidance. Starting a business takes liquid capital ($$$) and time. If you have had difficulty finding a job, starting a successful business would likely be even more difficult. I cannot imagine a situation where starting your own business would be the answer to a bad situation. Create a stable platform for yourself first, and then use that to venture into your own business from a comfortable position.
