Great advice so far....I agree that networking is key to finding a position. Use LinkedIn to connect with people in your industry and area. Finding groups on LinkedIn is a great way to find contacts. The best way to get into a company is an employee referral - see who you know that can assist you and don't be afraid to ask for help.

Mr. Otis, my belief is the Safety Industry is highly senstive to certificates and training. Your OSHA training is of course critical. I'd recommend getting as much OSHA training as you can. Also translate the training you've received in the service to your resume; it should speak volumes to potential employers. Good Luck!

My initial reaction is that your experience has a good connection to the type of position you're looking for. You need to craft a resume that illustrates your accomplishments -- see the article I just posted today -- that demonstrate those leadership experiences. It's not the "skills" that matter, it's what you've done with them.

I am also willing to help you revise your resume to make it a strong statement of your accomplishments.

Hi Otis,

I am a career counselor working with several veteran groups that assist vets in transitioning into the civilian workforce.

Over 70% of the jobs today are obtained through networking. Establishing an effective networking plan is a critical part of any job search strategy.

I would be glad to review your resume and offer some suggestions.

Regards,

Bill Smith
