Old Job Postings...

Veteran

Tauris Shingler Pensacola, FL

Sometimes when I'm job searching I'll run across and posting with a position that fits me very well but, when I look at the age of the posting it'll say posted 30+ days ago. I tend to skip those posting and not even bother apply but, now I'm wondering if that is a mistake. Just because a posting is 15, 20 or 30+ days old doesn't mean that they've filled the position or that the company isn't still looking.

So is it a mistake to overlook a job posting just because it's an older posting?

Tauris,

Applying to public job-postings is ABSOLUTELY one of the LEAST effective ways to earn a job-offer.

Study job-postings for the information they contain. Then, work to find internal career sponsors within or close to the employer. Need help learning how to find internal career sponsors? - Start a new discussion and ask!

Depending on the size of the company, it can take quite a while to fill an opening. Also, the way that the candidate management systems are set up, the job posting won't be taken off/closed until the job is, which means the interview process is complete and offer accepted. Since one never knows where in the hiring process the company is, I'd strongly recommend applying to postings of all durations. Worst case scenario, your resume will remain in that company's database for future opportunities.

If you were to screen out 'old' postings, I'd screen out those with posting dates of >120+ days.

I would agree with Howard; sometimes the postings stay out there because they cannot find the right candidate.

Tauris,

Thank you for your service.

It costs nothing to apply so what have you got lose. The best thing you can do is network to the hiring manager to ensure that your marketing brochure (resume) is read.
