How can I link my friends oil company with veterans seeking jobs?

Veteran

Dan Nelson Saint Paul, MN

My neighbor (I live in Houston) is desperately trying to hire veterans for rough neck jobs and other entry level positions, in a Fortune 500 company in oil and gas sector. How can I link his company with veterans seeking jobs?

Dan,

Have him checkout the Texas Workforce Commission website here: http://www.twc.state.tx.us/
He can register as an employer and publish job openings. Also, there may be opportunity in the social networking sites suchas Facebook and LinkedIn.

Hi Dan,
If your friend has facebook, tell him to join the Navy ERB Sailors group on facebook. In that group is a lot of sailors getting between now and September 1. Employers come to the group and list their positions and ask if any sailors are interested. It has been a huge success.

1. Consider contacting Lisa Rosser at "Value of a Veteran". Value of a Veteran "Teach[es] Organizations HOW to Recruit and Retain Military Veterans, Guard / Reserve & Military Spouses"

There are many websites specifically for veterans. Have your friend check them out.

Go to the ACP Linked In group and post there, then post ask all the veterans to send it to their networks.

Hello,
You are correct is stating the 'centralized' approach is not easily understood. When a company has a large budget they can use CareerBuilder, Monster and Indeed. However, many cmpanies cannot afford or may not get the results they are expecting. The site that does link them together is ACP and another is Direct Employers: http://www.directemployers.org/. There are many and I have seen people use LinkedIn very successfully.
I hope this helps!

These suggestions are all good.

But it seems there is no centralized way for employers to easily target and identify suitable Veteran candidates. Is there any service like Monster.com that focuses on Veterans?

Also post the jobs on craigslist, highlighting, in an appropriate and legal manner, the desire to hire military Veterans. Perhaps also attend Veteran-oriented job-fairs.

Look up the ESGR in your area. If you cannot find a contact for them, I have ESGR contacts here in Utah that can link you up with ESGR at the national level.

Note: ESGR=Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve

Hi Dan

Go to the unemployment office they are a good source for finding Veterans. Most Veterans have a first hire preference. You could also find reserve units and ask them if you could do a job presentation. Go to military bases and vist the UMR and see if you can post jobs for Vets. Hope this helps.

The workforce commission should also be able to hook him up with veteran agencies like hireheroes.org. He should also check with the US Department of Veteran Affairs - www.va.gov.
