I wasn't offered transition assistance before I separated from the military. Like some people, having trouble finding employment. Which I why I'm enrolled in college at the present time.

Hi Theodore-

I am retired after a 40 year career in industry where I hired over 100 people. Now I am helping veterans like yourself by helping with their resumes. If you would e-mail me your resume (drjamesfwatson@gmail.com) I would be happy to comment on it. I also recommend the book "Tired of Eating Peanut and Butter Sandwiches? - Tips to Get a Job Fast" available on Amazon. It contains practical advice. Good luck in your search!!

I can offer one other general tip: many resume searches used now are automated and they are set up to look for keywords. Make your list of accomplishments and experience as specific as possible and make sure to include the specific names of systems and computer software where you have expertise. The more specifics you have, the more likely that you'll include the keywords that the bots are looking for assuming that you have the skill set that matches the job requirements.

Theodore, some broad thoughts. Keep resume to one page. As suggested by another person, focus on accomplishments. Be specific about what you did and how you did it. Your early years are generally not important unless you had some honor like an eagle scout or some national sports award. When you send your resume out, you are going to
attach a brief cover letter after you have researched the company to find out more about them and what they need. You might even adjust your resume to that employer. Follow up with a hand written note after the interview thanking them for their time. Remember the purpose for your resume is to stand out from all the others that look the same and generic so you can get an interview. Hitting on an accomplishment in the area the employer is looking at for the hiring position will be a big hit.
One area you may want to think about is networking. You can attend networking groups, meet at conventions, etc. The best way to get a job today is to have someone recommend you. Good luck

Theodore - I would be happy to look over your resume. I am a veteran and had successfully transitioned some 30 years ago.

Theodore- Would be happy to assist. While having a good resume is important, it is my experience that most people have trouble with a job search because it is a process that we are not trained for.

Briefly stated, you are a product and you have to sell the product. To sell the product, you have to know the buyer's needs. In other words you have to sell to the need. It is not about what you want to do but what will sell.

Your resume needs to focus on problem solving with metrics that show the results of the problems you have solved for your past employer(s).

Happy to look at your materials. Send it to hedy4321@hotmail.com.
