In need of some help with my resume and cover letter.

Veteran

Brandie Lewis Sibley, MO

I have been out of the military for a little over 3 years. I have been looking for jobs to no avail. I have asked numerous people to help with my resume (that I used to have) and none of them were able to help me. So, I decided to start from scratch, but have no idea what I'm doing. I have never been good with putting words on paper.
I am looking for a job in the logistics realm. I did it for 11 1/2 years in the Army and I loved it.

If you would like to send your resume to me, I would be happy to review. I am not in logistics, but work in Human Resources, so I've reviewed a lot of resumes over the years.

Thank you for your service,
Byron Moore

Brandie,
The first thing that I would suggest is that you work with a military veteran in building your resume. If you are using a format in your resume that requires an "Objective" you need to make sure that the first two words are "Military veteran" then you can finish it with "seeking a position in (or) as a ,,,,,,,,." The average length of an objective is only two sentences. Make it direct and to the point because on a first review by a recruiter you usually get about 15 - 20 seconds of exposure. They are just in a sorting mode, looking for job seekers that fit their hiring needs. That's one of the main reasons for starting out identifying yourself as a veteran. There are a lot of tips and suggestions to building a good resume to include your military experience which in todays employment market employers are looking for. If you would like some additional help, please feel free to contact me.

I see you have plenty advice on your resume and cover letters. They are necessary but not sufficient. Figure out what companies you might aspire to work for and figure out how to get introduced to the hiring managers. This may come from friends of friends who work there. It might come from working the LinkedIn profiles to see who's who in the organizations. A huge percentage of jobs, especially in smaller operations are filled from internal contacts but never advertised. This takes work but no more work than sitting at home and typing useless responses to job postings that have 500 applicants. Figure out what you might love doing and go meet people who are doing that job. Make friends and you'll have a better chance than those in the line around the block at the Human Resources dept.
