Does anyone know if there are any grants out there anymore for nonprofits to help get started?

Veteran

Tasha Lawrence Montgomery, AL

Trying to open my own animal rescue/shelter for dogs, cats, and horses with an enfaces on dogs on the aggression list which currently are pit bulls. I already have a plot picked out, I have blue prints for the office building as well as where the animals will be kept. I am done with my business plan just spell checking and ensuring that all details are included. I have a grant writer just not sure if there are any more grants. I talked to the ASPCA who provide grants to nonprofit rescues however in order to receive one the business has to be up and running already for at least a year. I need to find a grant that not only will help with the startup costs but will help with ensuring that all paid employees receive a check each month so that all donations can go towards what is needed for the animals. I will have a vet and trainer on staff and already know the amount to start and everything. I was going to apply for a government grant however I cant find one anymore. Is there anything out there that will help with the start up costs and paychecks?

Hi

I am a non-profit board member - the news is that grants are drying up at all levels. Most require that all proceeds are directed to service delivery including professional fees, not salaries for administrators. My sense is that this will only frustrate you.

Check out a "crowd funding" inititive like this one https://www.kickstarter.com/, Good luck.

Tasha - I would encourage you to think about your business model and its sustainability. If you will need grant money to make payroll, what will you do when grants (inevitably) run out? I used to sit on the board of a pet rescue, and a few thoughts came to mind when reading your post. I am going to be quite direct, so I hope you don't mind.

Putting your emphasis on dogs on the aggression list will likely make it more difficult for you. This does not mean you should not do it, just be aware it will be MORE of an uphill battle than with "regular" breeds.

Why do you need an office building for a rescue? I've seen very few with that level of overhead. Most rescues run at or near the red, so do EVERYTHING you can to minimize your costs from Day 1.

A nonprofit rescue is normally not a business. You should be clear about what you are. If you are a nonprofit, then you are an "operation", or "organization", not "business". This matters when talking to potential funding source contacts. If you are a for-profit business, then you will find fewer funding sources.

How many paid employees are you planning on having? Most rescues run with a VERY small dedicated team (2-3 people at most), with a vet or 2 on standby (preferably for a reduced rate, since you're a rescue). Having a vet on staff at all times, unless it is a VERY large rescue, is a waste of your resources. A vet TECH is a good idea.

Finally, you did not address the question here (I presume it's in your plan) of what type of shelter you are. If you are no-kill, then the types of funds available will be broader than other types.

I wish you the best of luck - there are far too many animals in need of assistance!

Hello. What an awesome initiative! I wish you the best. You should contact your local Humane Society. I am sure they receive funding and can help you. Also, contact the local Small Business Association. Contact corporations like Purina, Pet Smart and etc. Most of them have corporate giving from which you can apply for grants on line. Good Luck doing the good work!

Hi Tasha,

I have a personal friend who does this for a living, and can likely help you with finding resources on a national level. Her name is Carole Verrocchi, and her contact information is available at http://www.pethavenrescue.org/. I know she has several employees now and can likely provide some really good advice. In addition to rescue, she also has a for-profit pet sitting business.

Please don't hesitate to mention my name, and let her know you're a transitioning veteran.

Best wishes,
Dana

Hi Tasha-

There is a ton of great info from the respondents already, so I'll just add a little bit more. Your local SCORE chapter can help you write your business plan and get your plans going .. and there is no cost, as SCORE is funded through the Small Business Administration. Your local chapter's URL is: http://www.alabamacapitol.score.org

Wishing you all the best and thank you for your service :)

Hi, Tasha,
These are all great answers, and I wanted to add the Foundation Center (foundationcenter.org/) to the mix. It's such a great resource and they also have a knowledgeable staff (they have hours for live chats online).
Also, for crowdfunding, in addition to kickstarter, there's indiegogo, and RocketHub, as well as smaller groups, like deposit a gift (http://www.depositagift.com/).

Wishing you much success,
Kathy

Tasha,
As you can see, most of the answers to your request begin with Google.
One of the best animal rescue organizations that shares your values is Best Friends in Kanab, UT. See http://bestfriends.org/. They have lots of resources, connections, and experience with starting and running rescue organizations for pit bulls and other 'so called'
aggressive animals. They helped rescue, rehab, and place in homes the "Vick" pit bulls from Virginia. Call them and get your mission off to a quick start. Save them all!
Good Luck,
Walt

Good Day to you,
I am not sure if this will help you out or not but http://www.fundsnetservices.com/searchresult/19/Animal-&-Wildlife-Grants.html
This is a list of grants available in your area, you may also want to contact a few of the national non-profits and the aspca as they will at least try and direct you to a few sources and may even be a source themselves.
Have a great day
