CFA membership

Veteran

Samuel Jang New York, NY

When I applied for regular CFA institute membership, I was told that I will be asked to attest that my work experience meets the working qualifications under the finance industry. I have worked in the U.S. Army for approximately 8 years, and I have no work experience in Finance. I have studied Economics and Mathematics at NYU for the past 4 years, expecting to graduate in December 2014. I wish to study for the CFA exam so that I can get the membership before I work for a commercial or an investment bank in the U.S.

Must I work for the finance industry for 4 years in order to get the CFA certificate?

You are seeking the most highly recognized designation in our field...great choice! Contact your local CFA chapter, attend an event as a guest and ask for a sponsorship (or ask a teacher who has a CFA) . Thats the process but not as difficult as it sounds and don't be shy about using your service in discussions. You can pass all 3 levels but need the documented experience prior to actually receiving your charter. Call me anytime if you have questions

Thank you so much, Mr. Schmidt. I will definitely look into this information session (while I study for the exams - all 3 levels).

Direct your question to CFA headquarters.

Also contact your local CFA chapter, and ask for advice, a mentor and informational interviews. Attend meetings and get involved.

Finally, your school should be able to help you with this question (professors, staff, career center, alumni, etc.)
