Are there any ideas as to where I can get serious but inexpensive help with a federal resume?

Hi everyone,

I have been separated from the Army for two years now. I was able to find a job after getting out working as a medical records tech contractor on the AFB close to home. However, there is no room for promotions or raises at my current position, and now that my husband is getting out of the military, my current pay will not be enough for my family to survive as we have 5 daughters.

I have what I thought was a good resume and I have applied to many jobs that I am well qualified for through USA jobs and other places but I never get moved forward to the interview process. I found out recently that the format that my resume is not in a "federal format" and that's why I never get selected. I have no idea how to translate my skills that I have bulleted on my current resume into an acceptable federal version. I have considered using a resume writing service but they are very pricey and I honestly would not know if they produced a quality product that I would be able to use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
Chelsea

Hi Chelsea,
There was an extensive discussion about crafting Federal resumes on LinkedIn in a group called Veteran Mentoring Network. It was a very robust discussion with alot of great feedback. I'm including the link to the discussion so you can go back and review and see if any of it is relevant and/or helpful for you.

There was a long discussion on the Veterans Mentoring Network group on LinkedIn about a month ago - I've taken some of the advice/discussion points and organized them for you (see attached) but if you want to see the full string, you can find it here - (you may want to cut and paste into your browser).

If you'd like any further resources or have any other questions, let me know.
Cheers,

Chelsea,

I am willing to help strategize with you (at no cost). My main advice is to try to rely less on someone "hopefully" liking what they see on your resume received from a job posting and get you to the top of the list by connecting proactively with recruiters.

If you would like to send me a message, we can arrange a time to speak.

Chelsea, I am a federal employee and I know how to write for federal positions there are different formats that can be used and which ones that attract the most attention. If you have not received any job offers with what you are using as of yet. then let me know I will share my resume format with you. I have used successfully for several positions.

Morgan - The Federal resume "thing" is new to me. After reading the advice of others with experience in Federal hiring, I really thing Federal résumé are their "own beast".

See link to LinkedIn discussion above.

As a recruiter at a defense contractor I can attest that the best way to get the government job is to have the job. Look at jobs with local contractors to get your foot in the door most jobs on USAJOBS are just for show and they already have a candidate in mind that is working in the role just for a contractor. We lose more people to the government then any other industry.

Send me your resume. Send me a personal message and I'll give you my personal email. I'll take a look at it.

I'm an avid believer that there the correct resume can be adapted for any position. I don't get caught up in federal vs civilian vs military. The right resume can be tweaked for all of them. I'm more than willing to look at yours and see if we can create a good base resume.
