Any suggestions on where to have a professional review my resume?

Veteran

Need as much help as possible with this resume. I have attended TAPS and have had the counselors there review my resume as well as some in my CoC. I'm really hoping that a set (or two or ten) of eyes can give me some pointers. Thanks in advance.

Look up your closest SCORE Chapter (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) and ask for a volunteer counselor or counselors to help you with and give you moral and practical support. You have skills from your years in service that you may take for granted. A counselor could help you see that. Thank you for your service.

Hi Joseph,

Corey provided some real good advices. Resume should be less than 2 pages and very focus on a specific job you apply. Major companies and recruiters are using computer word search to sort job candidates these days. If you are interest stay in air transportation, possibly focus on Federal Express and UPS air division at the location you want to stay could be helpful.

Feel free to send me you resume if have a specific job in mind. May be I can assist to customize.

Good luck!

Hi Joseph,

The only thing I would add is your resume is not a one size fits all document. It must be tailored to the job you're applying for. Try and learn the requirements of the job application process from someone you connect with at the company you want to work for.

First, thank you for your service. I would be happy to review your resume please PM me if you would like me to take a look. I haven't ever worked for the government but I can tell you that in private sector you want to keep it to 1-2 pages. Resumes these days are door openers not autobiographies. In many cases your resume is going to be reviewed by a person in HR department before being passed to a hiring manager. That HR person is going to look for a few key words or phrases to narrow down the list of candidates. In many cases that HR person is looking at hundreds of resumes so they are not going to review more than a page or two before deciding to pass on to the hiring manager. This is why many people will created multiple versions of their resume depending on the different types of jobs they are applying for. At a minimum for each job you apply for, you want the experience you list to directly (as possible) correlate to the requirements listed in the job posting. Hope this helps!

Are you going for a government job or a civilian sector one? I was you 4 years ago....A civilian one should be 2-3 pages for someone with your years and a government one should be 5-6 with your years.

Having just finished dealing with several resume issues with the last few jobs I placed resumes at, let me offer a few words of advice. First, if someone says keep it at one page, they are wrong. Make sure you add in all of the positions, duty titles, descriptions, and how many people you managed through each position. Try to use words that civilian would understand to replace the jargon you would normally use. Due to your years served, I would say a 2-3+ page resume is expected. Hope this helps on creating a good resume. On the review of the resume, try to connect with your local community college either on post or nearby, they should also give you some advice.

Thanks to everyone who took the time out of their day to respond to my initial question. Additionally, thank you for all the suggestions each of you made. Other than some part-time work while I was in high school and the 2 years of college I attended, the military is all I've known for my entire adult life. This transition is simply one of the unknown. I would be telling a lie if I said that I weren't just a bit intimidated and a bit more nervous about the whole ordeal. But again, thank you all for the time and responses. Wish me luck.
