Top candidate veteran seeking employment assistance

Prior to my service, I have had years of management experience in an industrial production facility. In the Navy, I was regarded as one of the highest caliber Work Center Supervisors of Damage Control Divisions in the Atlantic Fleet. I recently graduated Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA with a 3.99 GPA for a B.S. in Occupational and Technical Studies with Industrial Technology Emphasis and a minor in Management. I have used professional resume-writing/teaching programs to construct my resumes. I am looking for a position as either and instructional designer/trainer or a production manager/supervisor in a technological organization that has the potential to advance my professional development into a consulting role in the long-term future. Despite my experience and knowledge, I am having difficulty getting the right type of employers to contact me for an interview. I was hoping that someone on here might be able to assist me in finding a headhunter org. that can link me with private sector employment opportunities. I would greatly appreciate any assistance and advice anyone can offer!

First, thank you very much for your helpful responses Mrs. Greene and Mr. Arnaiz. I appreciate your assistance and willingness to take the time to help me. I should be more specific. I have been called in to 2 interviews recently. Mostly, I have been using careerbuilder and company web sites to apply for positions. I do understand the value of networking and have begun to do that as well. I simply have not been receiving nearly the type/quantity of responses that I would have expected, given my background experiences. I will be happy to send you both my resumes and a cover letter example. Again, thank you both for the advice and help. You will receive an e-mail from me shortly.

I agree with Deb, it sounds like you have an excellent and marketable skill set. I would love to assist you by giving another set of eyes to your resume, but also, may I suggest that you determine what area of industry you are most focused on achieving. I also like to "tailor" my resume to highlight specific skills that your ideal position may be looking for. Lastly, many recruiters do "key word" searches on a resume. As a result, its a matter of including those key words into the document so that the system will pick it up. Please feel free to reach out to me if I can assist, and best of luck!

One other suggestion....take a close look at the job descriptions for positions you are interested in. Try to identify the "buzz" words they are using to describe the job and make sure you use those words in your resume. There is software that is specifically designed to search resumes for certain words and if your resume doesn't have the words they are looking for, your resume will be passed over.

If your resume is wordy...cut it back. Use a "Skills" category with bullets to highlight specific areas of experience. You have less than 30 seconds to catch the hiring manager's eye.
