What is the best route for opening a trucking business?

Veteran

John Barker Victorville, CA

I have plenty of capital to get started. I have been thinking to start by using my trucks to run for FedEx until I get more experience in running a trucking business. Any thoughts on how I would contract with FedEx or do you think there is a better option? My reasoning here is I can go under their insurance at the beginning as I build my company's FMCSA scores.

I should also point out I am a truck driver myself. I run locally though. If I did the FedEx route my plan would be to run a route at least once so I can get a feel for what to expect of my drivers once I begin hiring.

To my knowledge there are certain routes with FedEx I would need to purchase before I can begin running that lane. Anyway let me know what you all think or if there is a better method to get started. Perhaps someone knows a really good dispatcher with good rates and I can bypass the FedEx idea entirely?

This is my idea to get at least started and then eventually transition to be independent company.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!
