How do I go from qualified to getting selected for government positions?

Veteran

Tondalia Watnem Milwaukee, WI

I have applied for several federal positions with my local DVA. I always manage to make it to the qualified section, based on my education and experience but I never get selected. I worked as a Burial Claims Specialist; however, due to a death in my family, I did not make it through the probationary period (that was over 10 years). On my SF 50 - my tenure is 3 (indefinite) and I am not sure what that means.

Hi Tondalia,

Thank you so much for your service and for your question! I have two suggestions for you. I would first suggest that you apply to our mentorship program:https://www.acp-usa.org/mentoring-program/veteran-application. You will be able to talk to someone who can give you better insight and that can help you brush up your soft skills. My second suggestion would be for you to check out our community tab. You can look for an advisor to talk with ( I suggest reaching out to a few) that have experience with federal work and that are local to you. If you have any questions on how to navigate this feature, please let me know.

Best,

Yasmina
