Leaving the Fed

Veteran

Tim Keefe Washington, DC

HI, folks.

I'm currently on the Fed side with DoD and am looking for a change. Believe it or not, it's not all wine and roses over on the Fed side, and sequestration woes are making things more difficult across the board. I'm coming up on three years on this side, and I'm looking for something more dynamic and that will put me on the path to where I want to go.

My experience in the 12+ years I've been in IT has been the following: project management, facilitation, SharePoint, information assurance/security, consulting, network administration, harsh environments, and military. I wish to continue in IT, but am flexible in where i want to go.

I'm open to larger firms like Deloitte and IBM, as well as smaller firms. However, I'm not necessarily wedded to doing consulting for the Fed and am casting my net wider.

In particular, I'm getting more and more interested in "green" technology and would like to explore more paths concerning IT and increasing costs and diminishing resources. In my work with non-profits years ago, I did some of this from the standpoint of securing low-cost or "free" resources for the clients I worked with, and that was rewarding.

I'm also, in general, interested in: big data, information assurance/security, technical writing, strategic planning, and project management.

Timothy-

I can also recommend AT&T in the DC area- especially if you already have a security clearance. If you find anything on their website that looks interesting and apply, let me know, I can at least send your resume to a Director I know there who used to handle the DOD from an ATT Sales perspective.

Timothy,
Thanks for your Army service. As we come up to Independence Day 2013, I am reminded how much our military members keep us safe and allow us to work in profitable private careers.
I proudly work at Hewlett Packard, and we are in the middle of a sizable turnaround thanks to Meg Whitman, our CEO. We have gone from laying off people several years ago, to hiring people today. I know that there are needs in the project management and security areas, and who better to understand security than our military members. That said, you must match your skills to available jobs, which are posted at the following link: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/jobsathp/index.html?jumpid=hpr_r1002_usen_link1
If you find that your experience falls short in one or two areas, my I suggest a class in that specific area at the local community college, which is very affordable. That's how I got into IT almost 15 years ago. Another school with excellent programs is DeVry, which also keeps closely aligned to job market demands and openings.
Another tip is to make certain your resume is detailed, neat, articulate, and perfect.
I have no doubt that if you prepare well and apply yourself, that you will succeed.
Best wishes on the next stage of your career!

Timothy, I agree with both Jennifer and Tom..Be specific on what you are looking for and you will get better results. Lookheed Martin shows great opportunity for what it seems you are looking for shows moving more in the direction by expanding and qualified veterans like yourself would be a great fit. GOOD LUCK on whatever you decide.

Timothy, why not consider a traditional defense contractor? I work for Lockheed Martin and not only are we the largest IT provider to the federal government, but we have an expanding international IT business and a fast growing alternative energy business. We recently sold the first commercial Ocean Thermal Energy Conversation plant, which will power a resort island in China. While sequestration is hurting the government and our traditional businesses, we have expanded our scope and are looking to take our technology and expertise to new, closely aligned markets. And we're a huge supporter of hiring veterans - about 25% of our workforce has served. I encourage you to check out the opportunities at: www.lockheedmartin.com/careers Best of luck to you!

Timothy - I'd try to get more focused, or perhaps re-post with a question about a specific field. I also suggest titling you re-post in a way that will attract answers from mentors best-positioned to help you. (e.g. mentors in IT Consulting, green/environmental careers, etc.)
