Reaching out to make connections in Los Angeles. Investment/commercial banking

Veteran

Cody Callarman San Diego, CA

Good morning everyone,
I’m new to AdvisorNet and excited to connect. I separated from the Marine Corps about 7 years ago and have been an instructor/program manager for a Marine Corps school house since. I also have experience in owning a small business and multi-unit property investing. I have a BA in finance and currently working on my MBA and Project Management certification.
I am looking to seek out a new career in the financial industry, preferably in the investment/commercial banking. My ask is to help make new connects in Los Angeles and start building relationships. The specific institution doesn’t matter to myself, I just want understanding of the environment before I start reaching out for opportunities.
I appreciation any help or advise. Thank you in advance to everyone,
Cody Callarman

Hi Cody. I work as an investment banker in Los Angeles. Finance in Los Angeles is a small community. I would recommend coming up with a target list of companies to figure out which firms you would want to work at. Then I would start doing a lot of research on LinkedIn and find people that may be alumni at firms you would want to work at and try to have some phone calls to learn more about these firms and their positions. Once you have done that you can start looking at trying to connect directly with people at target companies of your interest. Be realistic about your skill sets when looking for positions. Where you finish is more important than where you start so if you find that positions you want are aligned for people with more experience do not be too proud to shoot for something lower and then work your way up as you get more experience. Hopefully this is helpful.

Best,

Tarek

Hey Cody.

Great insights from Kevin, Ham and Caitlin. Like Ham, I also work for Wells Fargo, but in Enterprise Technology that services the Consumer Banking, Lending and Innovation. I previously worked in our Project/Program Center of Excellence that oversees all business- technical projects and believe this added perspective will help in your discovery of future opportunities and current continuing education.

Let me know the best number to reach you, and round out your other meetings with ACP members. Cheers!
Peter

Hi Cody,

Thanks for reaching out.

My experience has been executive roles in the mortgage banking space for large banks and now provide expert witness support. If this type of insight will be helpful, please let me know how to directly connect with you. I agree with Ham’s post that it may be a more productive conversation if you can help narrow down the aspects of the banking segments that are of most interest to you.

I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Kevin

Hi Cody - I am a sales manager for a division of Wells Fargo based Southern California. I would be happy to connect with you to share my experience in commercial banking.

First I would ask your preference, as commercial banking and investment banking are very different industries. My experience is in commercial banking, which itself has many different branches. For example, you noted your experience in multi-family property investing. Real estate lending is just one area within commercial banking.

Let me know if you'd like to connect and how to reach you.

Thanks!
