I am finishing up my Psychology undergraduate degree. The local hospital agreed to have me as an intern. I have met the administrator over education, spoken with the manager over the units I will be assigned. I have been fingerprinted and had the background completed. I am just waiting to start. I am nervous about the hospital changing their mind at the last minute and I need to find a new placement. I am not familiar with how hospitals operate.

My name is John and I am a Hospital Administrator with Kaiser Permanente in California. Hospitals do not operate small and independent as they used to. Most are now part of a larger organization with centralized HR, Recruitment, and Internship programs. An unfortunate bi-product of this is slow processes and onboarding. Hang in there. Getting in with a health system is notoriously slow. Continue to ping your direct recruitment contact in an appropriate and professional frequency and understand that the delay is probably not due to them. Best of luck,

Secondly, I would echo Bernard's feedback, but suggest that -- in your email/phone confirmation --- you pose specific questions, i.e.: 1) where I park, 2) what I wear, 3) worktimes consistent or variable, 4) bring food or buy onsite, etc. By design, answering these specific questions will reinforce your intern role as a 'done deal' ... or if not ... open the door for what's still 'TBD.'

First off, thank you for your service and congratulations on finishing up your degree and securing an internship – that’s a fantastic accomplishment!
I’m sure that between finishing your degree and securing an internship this must be a stressful time, but keep in mind that the hospital would not have gone through all this trouble to pull the rug out from under you at the last second.
At this point, no news is good news and now that everything has been finalized the hospital is just waiting for you to show up for work on your first day. However, if you want to put all doubts to rest, consider sending your direct supervisor an e-mail wanting to confirm that everything is in order for your start on “date X” and that you’re really looking forward to your time there.
